Return on Investment from Learning

At Future London Academy, we believe that you should #neverstoplearning, but have you ever wondered why?
Here’s some proof to back it up:

“ Education and training typically generate a return on investment that’s between 2.5-3 times higher than recruiting, boosting the business case for investing in skills... ”
— Business of Fashion, 2023

😲Sounds pretty great, right? So, how do you generate that return on investment in your business or team? According to Rebecca Robins, Global Chief Learning and Culture Office at Interbrand, gaining that return on investment is all about building a strong brand-led culture of learning. Rebecca spoke to our Design Leaders cohort about how to unleash the power of learning in order to achieve better results. Check out her insights below. 👇

What is a culture of learning?

A culture of learning is a management philosophy that requires a fundamental respect for curiosity and a growth mindset. It provides a safe space to experiment, to push, to stretch.

“ At Microsoft, CEO Satya Nadella implemented a ‘learn it all’ culture, which resulted in a 32% growth in brand value. How amazing is that??? ”
— Best Global Brands, 2022

What are the benefits?

How do CEO’s like Satya Nadella generate an incredible return on Microsoft’s learning investment?

Here are the ways a culture of learning benefits all involved:

  • A culture of learning adds value to the lives of your employees.
  • This boosts employee pride and loyalty, keeping your employees motivated to grow within the company.
  • This helps you find the best talent, boosting your talent pool.
  • The high quality of talent increases customer satisfaction and loyalty.

When you invest time in learning, everyone wins!

For example, LEGO reached record-high employee satisfaction by creating the Leadership Playground, encouraging employees to feel energised everyday. LEGO encourages its employees to “be curious, brave, and focused.”

— Fortune Magazine, 2023

How do you make this happen?

Here are three ways to jumpstart a culture of learning for yourself and for your team:

  1. Empower employees to define their own learning path. Foster a culture of active learning to keep people curious and motivated.
  2. Provide diverse learning opportunities. People learn in different ways. Make sure to provide a variety of visual, audio, and hands-on ways to absorb new ideas.
  3. Create new rituals within the company. Make learning a community-building activity!
