How to be more creative: 5 tips

It's time to forget all that 'you-need-to-be-born-creative' nonsense!

If you want to make your creativity blossom and bring better ideas to the table, have a look at the insights from our webinar with the outstanding Thierry Brunfaut, founder of Base Design.⭐️

Below are some practical tips on how to be more creative and to build a culture of creativity in your company. Full video is also available on our YouTube channel.

GET RID OF THE BOX

In agencies people are often divided between creative (designers, illustrators, copywriters) and non-creative (project managers, strategists, etc.).

People are put in boxes of certain skills and avoid doing something else. But those boxes exist only in people's minds.

Try doing what you don't usually do. If you’re a designer — write a copy or work on a strategy; a strategist or manager — brainstorm ideas or draw.

EVERYTHING IS A REMIX

Copying others work is highly shamed in the design industry. But according to Kirby Ferguson three basic elements of creativity are copy, transform and combine.

Don’t create from a blank page. Take something that exists, copy and transform it to make something new. Try it! The idea that you can freely copy is very liberating.

BE RIDICULOUS

Fear is the main enemy of creativity. People are afraid to share their opinion and ideas because they worry they say something stupid.

To evacuate this fear and create a safe space for expressing ideas, ask everyone on the team to share stories of being ridiculous in public. You’ll see that EVERYONE is ridiculous and it’s totally okay.

SPECIAL SKILLS

You don’t need skills to be creative. You don’t need to know how to draw, or to use Photoshop, or to play music. Hard skills are a great bonus, but they don't define your creativity.

There are many ways to express your idea. Play with stuff: cut, glue, create moodboards, build. Find the way suits you.

CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT

People don't usually get magically struck with genius ideas. Ideas come from outside. So you need to put yourself in a creative environment.

Surround yourself with things you like: references, images, photos, objects. Surround yourself with people to share and exchange ideas.
