Top 10 things to do in San Francisco this January

This January Future London Academy is travelling to San Francisco to host Module 3 of our Design Leaders Programme. Turns out it’s one of the best times of the year to go as the city's top attractions are at their quietest.

Elim Chan conducts Tchaikovsky

Dates: January 12th, 13th, 14th

Feel classy by listening Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony followed by Sergei Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto at the SF Symphony. A sunny celebration with folk tunes of the Second Symphony is contrasted by a darkly lyrical opening and a vigorous finale of Prokofiev’s Concerto giving you all spectre of emotions. And don’t worry about the dress code. You are encouraged to come as yourself in a style of your choice as there is no right way to enjoy the Symphony!

Warriors vs. Suns

One cannot travel to SF and not attend the Golden State Warriors basketball game. So head to the Chase Center and get ready for an unforgettable game day. And who knows you might run into Jay Z & Beyonce or Jessica Alba who attend GSW games often.

SF MOMA

SF MOMA is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the United States and a thriving cultural center for the Bay Area. The museum has a remarkable collection of painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, design, and media arts. If you are in the mood for some art, this is definitely a must-see. And make sure you check out the new exhibition — Erratic. This impressive presentation of the fascinations of the Arctic and Antarctic invites visitors to approach an environmentally, culturally, and politically charged geography.

De Young Museum

De Young is one of the most diverse museums in USA. It is home to American art, textile arts and costumes, African art, Oceanic art, arts of the Americas, and international contemporary art. The architecture of the museum is itself a piece of art and the exhibitions are always very impressive. Give it a go, it's sooo worth it!

Moongate Lounge

One of the most interesting bars located above one of the most interesting restaurants in the very heart of San Francisco's Chinatown. Moongate lounge is a swanky, lunar-inspired space that transports patrons to another world through velvet high-back booths, blue carpets, and restored Chinese murals. Come here if you're up for throwing on heels or a blazer and tasting some of the best cocktails in town.

City Lights Booksellers & Publishers

Founded by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti in 1953, City Lights became an instant gathering place for readers, writers, artists, and activists. In 1956, City Lights published Allen Ginsberg's seminal poem “Howl” and became the lightning rod for a new generation of untamed poets. A legendary literary meeting place, City Lights is a landmark bookstore and publishing house where readers come to browse, read and soak in the ambiance of alternative culture. The Perish Trust

The Perish Trust is a modern store with a passion for the best well worn homegoods and the most unique local handywork. Established by photo art director, Rod Hipskind and commercial photographer, Kelly Ishikawa, it's a dream destination for any creative thinker who is up for authentic California Heritage and unique crafted pieces.

Neighbor Bakehouse

Slightly off the beaten track located in one of the coolest SF neighbourhoods, this bakery offers AMAZING baked goods. They are actually so good that people are lining up to get a piece so plan your visit wisely and avoid peak hours. The area, being a hub for creatives, artisans and makers, is very nice and offers plenty of artistic and designer stores, so make sure to check it out.

Exploratorium's After Dark & California Academy of Science's NightLife

Calling all creatures of the night: embark on a nocturnal adventure every Thursday night at California’s Academy of Science or Exploratorium. Both museums offer amazing night programmes with activities like live DJs, outdoor bars, ambiance lighting and iconic exhibitions. No kids allowed but you can act like one. Unplug and play with interactive exhibits at the Exploratorium and visit the Shake House and four-story Rainforest at CAS. Get inquisitive, grab a drink, and let the DJ set the vibe — the night is sure to be wild.
